History & Benefits of Kundalini Yoga

  • A little History

Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, is the original and most powerful system of Yoga. It is excellent for students of all levels of experience. The best way to learn about Kundalini Yoga is to experience it for yourself. Kundalini Yoga is a dynamic form of yoga that uses sets of yogic postures and movements (asana) with meditative focus, breath work (pranayama), and chanting (mantra).

Kundalini Yoga was first introduced to the West by Yogi Bhajan in 1969. Through his teachings, 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization) was established to share the belief that happiness is the birthright of every human being. Yoga Phoenix is proud to be one of over 300 3HO Kundalini Yoga centers in the world.

Who is Yogi Bhajan?

Yogi Bhajan, also known as Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji, was born as Harbhajan Singh Puri in what is now Pakistan. When he was eight years old he began his yogic training with an enlightened teacher, Sant Hazara Singh, who proclaimed Yogi Bhajan to be a Master of Kundalini Yoga when he was just sixteen and a half.

Yogi Bhajan left behind a lucrative governmental career in India with the vision of bringing Yoga to the West in 1968. He broke from the long-held tradition of passing the technology of Kundalini Yoga from master to chosen disciple and was the first to publicly teach Kundalini Yoga, which sparked a movement of Yoga and Meditation that has gained widespread acceptance and popularity in our culture.

Additionally, Yogi Bhajan was a devoted Sikh and through his personal efforts, Sikh Dharma was legally incorporated and officially recognized as a religion in the USA in 1971. Over the years, Yogi Bhajan worked as an advocate of world peace and unity with world leaders of all faiths and political affiliations. His work included collaboration and inter-faith dialog with well known religious leaders such as Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II, the Dalai Lama and two Archbishops of Canterbury.

With a deep and compassionate insight into the human condition, Yogi Bhajan produced a prolific body of teachings and writings, established permanent institutions, and earned a distinguished reputation as a man of peace, world vision and wisdom. Through his legacy he continues to bless those whom he loved, that is, the entire human race.
